A great race this, well organised and superbly marshalled. A must do race for next year!
Having decided that after the Grisdale Fell race (where I was fortunate enough to help a fellow runner in trouble), that this was a similar distance and climb, I would 'go for it'!
Having read the race route description time and again, studied the route I felt reasonably confident about a 2 hour 20/30 time, what I didn't take into consideration was the lack of grip on my new shoes, great for rocky wet, not so great on boggy wet!
The first part of this race is quite fast, its a mad dash to the river followed by reasonably runnable tracks, then its a long, long climb up to Wetherlam, gradually increasing in steepness! once through the check point its a fast pace to check point 2, Prison band didn't seem too bad!! from CP2 down Great Carrs is Fast and it was somewhat wet, I managed a double pirouette on the way down and managed to stay upright !! result!
I barely noticed the 3 Shires Stone at the summit of Wrynose Pass as I was trying to get my head round the ascent of Blisco and remember the route. Pike of Blisco isn't steep from this angle of attack but it is, unfortunately, fairly runnable and a bit of a slog. Once on its rocky plateau I took stock of my remaining strength and thought 'I would just like to finish this race'.
The views from the summit were magnificent and unfortunately so too was the view of Lingmoor fell, in the far, far distance!
If you ever fancy racing the 3 Shires, and I recommend you do, I would wholeheartedly support the idea of reccying this part of the route as there seems to be a plethora of route options, mostly it seems by accident, I stumbled upon a direct line to the path which leads to Blea tarn and caught up runners that were at least 2 mins in front of me!! (if any runner from another club is reading this what I meant to say was, I followed my pre-planned route to Blea Tarn and easily made up 2 mins!!)
Lingmoor fell is not a high hill but it is painfully quick, or more like, its a fast walk to the top followed by a storming descent where your legs are screaming out to slow down but it is a nice, if not a little rocky, way down to the finish and the heavenly site of the 3 Shires Inn oh! and the finish!
Tea (yuk) and pasty at the finish makes for a good day out, a pint and pasty makes a great day out :)
